Classic horror movies are most closely associated with their villain, and there are few more terrifying than Halloween's Michael Myers. The boogeyman is large, imposing, and most of all emotionless. Part of what makes Michael so scary is his signature white mask, which has always kept the killer's face hidden throughout the decades of movies. There have been many versions of the mask, and Blumhouse's Halloween had to craft their own version for the upcoming sequel. Because its been 40 years since Michael first attacked the babysitters of Haddonfield, it needed to be aged appropriately. I had the chance to visit the set of Halloween during filming, where FX Makeup Designer Chris Nelson revealed his process for crafting Michael's newest mask.

Well really, I looked at a lot of forty year old masks and the various stages they were in. I actually had a couple of old Don Post masks that were I think from thirty nine years ago, from when I was a kid and a few of my friends had them. So we looked at those masks, see how they aged, see what kind of decomposition they had. The folds and wrinkles, depending on how they were kept. We took to mind in the context of this story how this mask was stored over all these years, and talking to David [Gordon Green]. And just kind of combined all of that, accentuated it a little bit for cinematic purposes because a lot of the wear and tear on a mask probably wouldn't show up unless it was really decomposed. Because in our minds it was kept in a bag, in a box, in an evidence room for quite a long time. Being covered and away from UV light, it was a little more protected than a mask that was just laying out would be, so we took that into account.

It looks like Chris Nelson and everyone involved in the crafting of Michael Myers' new mask really tried to think methodically about what it would look like after decades. Not content with simply aging the face, he also weighed how much natural light it may have been exposed to, as well as the environment it would have been stored in. It's an almost collegiate approach to creating a monster mask, highlighting how much reverence everyone involved in the Halloween reboot has for John Carpenter's original film.

The story of the Michael Myers mask is a funny one, as it was originally a cheap mask of William Shatner in Star Trek, which was then distressed and dyed during the first film's production. Chris Nelson mentions a Don Post mask, which was actually the original one planned for Michael. Eventually a few choices were weighed, and the Shatner one seemed the most emotionless and terrifying.

From Halloween's first trailer, you can also see a few more interesting additions to Michael Myers' mask. There is a puncture in the neck, where Laurie Strode attacked the villain with a knitting needle in the first film. Additionally, there seems to be some extra damage around the eye, where the OG scream queen used a wire hanger to defend herself.

It sounds like Todd Phillips' Joker movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix, was put together on the fly. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just makes us more curious than ever about the result, due in theaters this October. It sounds like Zazie Beetz is also curious to see how the film turns out. She plays cynical single mom Sophie Dumond in Joker, but when asked for details on the movie she seemed genuinely stumped on what to say:

I can't say anything. It's gritty and dark. I mean, I haven't seen a cut or anything. Gotham. [laughs] The script was great, we rewrote the whole thing while we were shooting it. Literally, we would go into [director/co-writer Todd Phillips] trailer and write the scene for the night and then do it. ... During hair and makeup we'd memorize those lines and then do them, and then we'd reshoot that three weeks later. We had to do everything then because Joaquin [Phoenix] had lost so much weight. We couldn't do reshoots later on, so we were figuring it out.

Wow, there's a lot to think about there. Zazie Beetz shared her intel during an MTV News interview that also included Armie Hammer. When she mentioned going into the trailer to rewrite scenes, Hammer quipped that the screenwriter of the film was going to be so pissed to hear that. Beetz added that he was in there with them, helping shape the script, presumably referring to co-writer Scott Silver, who is credited on the script with Todd Phillips.

At least it sounds like Joker won't be going back for reshoots, at least not for Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck/Joker, unless they can find a way around the weight loss issue. Phoenix is certainly known for getting deep into character, and it sounds like a real transformation is coming.

Fans already noticed Joaquin Phoenix's weight loss this past fall when he was spotted looking much thinner on the streets of New York City. Fans don't always connect weight loss with filmmaking complications, but it's true that you have to get very creative if you feel like rewriting a scene that took place when your main character was, say, 20 pounds lighter or heavier.

Zazie Beetz did credit Todd Phillips with being "quick at getting stuff done" so they had extra time to do everything after rewriting scenes. So it wasn't a rushed set in that way, but it has to be ... what? ... confusing, frustrating, or just exciting and electric to be live in the moment figuring out what will happen next?

I'd want a set script, but I'm also not an actor or filmmaker. However, I am a film watcher, and if this movie ends up feeling like it was made on the fly, then it's a problem.

This Warner Bros./DC film is separate from the DCEU of Justice League and Shazam! According to the official synopsis, Joker follows the iconic arch-nemesis through an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The tale of Arthur Fleck shows a man disregarded by society. It's meant to not only be a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker is also said to star Robert De Niro as a talk show host. Martin Scorsese was attached to the movie at one point as a producer. Together with the Joker's story, that got some fans thinking of the great film The King of Comedy as a potential touchstone for this movie. But if they rewrote the script as they went along, it's hard to know how much inspiration they drew from anything. Plans may have changed during the September to December filming schedule.

Joker also stars Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, and Shea Whigham. It's scheduled to open in theaters on October 4. Here's what else you can look forward to watching on the big screen in 2019.

What Will Happen To Disney's X-Men Franchise After Dark Phoenix

With Disney's acquisition of Fox officially completed in late March, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be the first official X-Men film to premiere under the Marvel and Disney umbrella. From there, fans have been given a bit of information on what's next for the X-Men, but only in the form of release dates for films. As many may know, however, dates can always change and movies can be cancelled, so what will happen to the X-Men following Dark Phoenix?

We do have some answers, and some healthy speculation that explores how Disney and Marvel may incorporate the Mutants into its Phase 4 plans. We also have a history of the franchise from the time it left Marvel to its return, which provides context and explains why the answers behind the future of the X-Men franchise aren't easy to assume.

The X-Men Franchise Under FoxThe year was 1993, and Marvel was far from the financial powerhouse it is today. As a way to stay afloat and get some cash, the comic company sold the movie rights of its heroes to film studios, such as Spider-Man to Sony, and of course, the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise to 20th Century Fox. The decision was based, in part, due to the studio's success with X-Men: The Animated Series, which premiered in 1992.

The first Fox X-Men movie wouldn't hit theaters until 2000, and would prove to be a massive hit, making $296 million at the box office on a $75 million budget. There would be two financially successful direct sequels, both of which would more heavily revolve around the star of its spinoff films Hugh Jackman. Folks loved Wolverine, and still do to the point fans hoped he'd reprise his role when the Disney and Fox deal went through.

Wolverine would continue to be the Marvel franchise's sole spinoff character until 2011, when X-Men: First Class introduced another commercially successful spinoff to the mix. In 2014, Deadpool was introduced, and fundamentally changed Hollywood's perception on the commercial viability of R-rated features for superheroes.

While Fox's X-Men movies were commercially successful, there was little consistency in the acclaim between X-Men films. Additionally, the franchise's timeline was a bit of a mess, despite the best efforts by X-Men: Days of Future Past to marry the worlds of the original cast and the First Class cast. It apparently wasn't a big deal for Fox for it all to make sense at the time, although it is a factor that may come into play later.

The X-Men Franchise Under DisneyWhile Fox was making oodles of X-Men movies off of Marvel's characters, the original company had finally found some ground in the film world via Iron Man. Marvel's success caught the attention of Hollywood, including Disney, who successfully acquired Marvel Studios a little over a year after Iron Man's release date. With the massive purchasing power of Disney behind it, Marvel was in a great position to purchase back the rights for some of its characters.

Disney got to work and successfully navigated deals with Sony to get Marvel Studios involved in Spider-Man, and also has a right of first refusal with Universal should the studio ever want to collaborate on another Hulk film. To say Disney was explicitly interested in purchasing Fox for the X-Men isn't entirely true, as the Avatar franchise and television franchises (including sports) under the umbrella will give plenty of value as well.

There was a slight competition between Disney and Comcast for Fox, but the House of Mouse won out in the end and got the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise back for Marvel. The two movies Fox had in-development, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, had both been postponed prior to the acquisition.

Now, Dark Phoenix is slated to be released on June 9, but New Mutants has been pushed back to a release in April of 2020. Additionally, Fox's long in-development spinoff that highlights the mutant Gambit has officially been shelved. The movie had yet to get some serious traction for quite some time, and had various issues since the idea was first proposed over a decade ago. In short, Disney's decision to effectively kill the movie isn't all that surprising.

The Future Of X-MenAfter X-Men: Dark Phoenix premieres, there's a question of what will happen to the rest of the Marvel franchise. There's been curiosity as to whether Marvel Studios will incorporate the existing cast into the MCU, and some or all of the heroes will make an appearance in Phase Four. It's certainly a possibility, although some skeptics believe that Marvel might opt for a full-scale reboot due to the inconsistent timeline of the franchise potentially tainting its carefully crafted universe.

The release of Avengers: Endgame and recent revelations from Spider-Man: Far From Home somewhat deepen the mystery, as there's a potential way for the X-Men franchise to exist within the MCU in the form of a separate multiverse. This would mean that the X-Men are in a parallel universe from the rest of the MCU, which would prevent any of its events or confusing timelines from invading on the rest of the MCU.

The good news, is that if Phase Four includes the multiverse, it's already been heavily implied that characters can travel between them. This, of course, means the X-Men could theoretically one day fight alongside (or against) the Avengers, and that War Machine could appear alongside Deadpool like Don Cheadle has been hoping for. Provided this is what Marvel has planned, it's the perfect situation where Disney can have the cake, and eat it too.

Again, though, nothing is certain and Disney and Marvel could also just keep the X-Men separate from the rest of the MCU, or do a reboot of the franchise entirely sometime after X-Men: Dark Phoenix or New Mutants. It could also establish an entirely new set of Mutants exclusive to the MCU, considering Scarlet Witch and her brother Quicksilver were technically mutants. These days, nothing seems entirely off the table with Disney and Marvel.

We've been hearing a lot about Chris Pine's next movie venture over the last few weeks. First we got a good look at the actor playing bearded historical character Robert The Bruce and then we were able to take a look at the first trailer for the movie. However, while the trailer was full of period costumes and fighting, there was one thing missing that we can expect to be a part of the final product when it hits Netflix: full-frontal nudity. Despite Chris Pine's apparent lack of fondness for talking about his penis, the actor did reveal that filming the scenes wasn't as comfortable as you might guess. Not only did he have to drop trou in front of people on the set, he also admits that while filming his nude scene it was "very cold" and also they were filming in a weird location next to a highway.

Speaking to THR at the Toronto International Film Festival, Chris Pine did say that he felt the nude scene was important, which is why he chose to go full-frontal in Outlaw King.

I wouldn't obviously do it if I didn't feel it was important. Underneath the Emperor's clothes is a mulling, puking little kid who was once upon a time just rolling around in the mud and a child. The idea that underneath every prime minister, and president, and ruling leader that we give power to is someone that is just an animal, and if you stripped all of that bullshit aside, they would be hunting and gathering, and fornicating and pooping. We're just base animals. I thought it was very important to see this man who's going to have power be an animal.

While some projects like Starz's Spartacus have previously embraced full-frontal nudity, the idea of a dude laying it all out there is still fairly novel, especially on TV. (Game of Thrones has also shown a fair number of dick shots, although Emilia Clarke has previously noted fans see way more boobs.) Netflix has embraced full-frontal a bit more than the average theatrical studio, as evidenced when Adam Devine also showed his penis in Game Over, Man!, also a Netflix original movie. So, although Chris Pine doesn't think it's a big deal he decided to get nude for Outlaw King, the fact that it's still a new-ish thing for Netflix or other at-home entertainment to be doing makes it a bit of a talking point.

While we'll have to wait for the nude scene in the movie, the scruffy beard Chris Pine sports in the upcoming movie is still worth taking a look at. Check out the trailer, below.
