Bohemian Rhapsody Has Screened, Here's What People Are Saying

The movie about Freddie Mercury and the band Queen won't arrive for most of us for several weeks, but the movie has now screened for a select few. Considering how much people tend to like music in their movies, and how many people just love Queen, there are a lot of people who are likely very interested in hearing how good Bohemian Rhapsody actually is. Unfortunately, it's somewhat hard to tell, because the early responses are all over the place.

Mike Ryan from Uproxx takes issue with the way the film portrays the lead singer while praising Rami Malek for the role, and also one very special cameo...

My biggest takeaway from Bohemian Rhapsody is how much the rest of Queen resents Freddie Mercury. But Rami Malek is outstanding. Also, the fact Mike Myers is in this movie is genius and insane.

Ryan goes on in a later tweet to say the third act of the movie "is not even close to accurate" which would seem to indicate that it doesn't paint Mercury in a good light and that the rest of Queen, who was directly involved in the production, might be the reason that's the case.

Eric Kohn from Indiewire had a similar response to Uproxx. He was clearly unimpressed by Bohemian Rhapsody overall. Although, he does call out one specific scene in the movie that was apparently quite impressive, the recreation of Queen's famous Live Aid performance.

This is not to say that everybody has mixed feelings about Bohemian Rhapsody. Legion of Leia's Jenna Busch is unequivocal in her love for the movie. She also specifically praises Rami Malek's performance but also says the movie tells a great story and works really well as a concert film, which will likely be what makes the movie really work for many Queen fans.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the New York Times, who gives Bohemian Rhapsody one if its harshest responses. While Kyle Buchanan still has good things to say about Rami Malek, he's not quite as complimentary as he appears, and the rest of the movie comes off even worse.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a glorified Wikipedia entry but Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury (and wears his wonderful costumes) with incredible gusto

Claiming that Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury "with gusto" isn't the same as saying he plays him well. It may mean that the actor gave the role his all, but it doesn't mean that the end result is necessarily successful.

In the end, the most accurate response to Bohemian Rhapsody may have come from Indiewire's Anne Thompson, who has correctly predicted that this film is going to get mixed reviews.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a straight-on biopic with plenty of Queen music and a strong performance by Rami Malek. It will get mixed reviews. It might play with audiences.

If the first batch of responses is true, then mixed reviews may very well be incoming. Of course, that doesn't mean the movie won't be a hit. Between the generally well regarded lead performance and what seems to be generally regarded appreciation for the use of Queen's music, we could still very well see the movie draw in huge audiences.

The Advice Chris Hemsworth Got About Moviemaking From Tom Cruise

Chris Hemsworth has been in the acting business long enough that hes worked with plenty of heavy hitters as well as in big franchises like the MCU and Star Trek. However, he also has had the chance to talk to a-lister Tom Cruise about moviemaking in general and he took the opportunity to ask him about what drove him in the business. Per Hemsworth:

I asked Tom Cruise years ago what drove him to make certain decisions on films. He said, I just want people to see my movies. I dont want to put that much blood, sweat and tears into it, and have it come and go.

"Whatever it takes," right? Tom Cruise is known for a lot of things, but one of them is the work ethic he puts into his own movies, which involves him performing stuntwork other actors may not dare to. He also helps with decision-making behind the camera, and stories about his alleged work ethic came up when The Mummy was a bit of a disaster a couple of years ago.

According to what Chris Hemsworth revealed to Variety, Tom Cruises work ethic really fascinated him, leading to a point where Cruise gave the younger actor advice about moviemaking and the work that is put in.

Chris Hemsworth is also team big screen, telling the outlet in the same interview that he believes in the medium and hopes people will still continue moviegoing in droves. He said:

I just love the theatrical experience. I think theres nothing quite like it, and the industry will change in a big way if we dont get people to the cinema.

Theres been a pretty big shift in the industry as a lot of key content players have headed to Netflix or elsewhere streaming, just as there have been big advocates for theatrical moviegoing to remain a mainstay. Some have been vocal about disliking the streaming model, but that's not really what's mentioned here.

So far, studies have shown that people who consume media streaming often tend to go to the theater in higher numbers, but what Chris Hemsworth seems to be saying boils more down to wanting to make sure the movies he (and Tom Cruise) makes are good enough that they engage the theatrical audience and keep people excited about going to the movies. It's less of an us and them mentality and more of a what can be done to improve the project I'm on sort of thing.

Still, moviegoing and the movie experience is certain topical this days, with movies searching worldwide for larger audiences and theaters finding creative ways to keep fans coming in droves.

No one who works insanely hard on a movie and wants it to come and go with bad reviews, or possibly worse, indifference at the box office. And while Tom Cruise has not been immune to bad reviews in his career, he does what he can to make sure the final project is the best it could be. That's advice that any actor could latch onto.
