For serious fans of the Harry Potter franchise, the Fantastic Beasts movies have been a welcome addition to the canon. They have filled in a lot of backstory for different characters and events only referenced in the original novels. However, one character who has become surprisingly important in the prequel films is Nagini, a character we knew only as a snake from the main series, but we learned was actually human in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. While this revelation was a surprise to many, J.K. Rowling says it should not have been because the information was always there. According to the author...

These movies have given me the chance to tell a story that I knew all along about Nagini, who appears only as a snake in Potter. Now, there were always hints that she had been human. In her name because the Naga are, in mythology, a race of snake beings. So the name was an allusion to the fact that she may herself once have been human.

The Naga is a mythological being that is actually half human and half cobra, not one that transforms between the two states as the character does in Fantastic Beasts, but the connection is still obvious. Nagini would be the feminine version of the word, telling us the gender of the snake that stayed by the side of Lord Voldemort.

J.K. Rowling has built a reputation over the past few years of dropping some interesting information about various characters in Harry Potter that is never stated in the text, but according to her has always been part of the official back story. This particular item, which was reveled in one of the Blu-ray extras attached to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (via the Insider) seems to be a little more on the level then some of the revelations we've been given.

The connection certainly makes sense. Anybody who was familiar with the etymology of the name Nagini could have potentially made the connection on their own, some probably did. While it doesn't guarantee that J.K. Rowling had always seen Nagini as formerly human, she even says herself that the allusion was meant to imply she "may" have been human, it certainly left the door open to the idea if the need for such a plot point were ever to surface.

Of course, now that we have met the human version of the character, we have a lot more questions. Nagini appears to be one of the good guys following the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald, certainly more so than some others who have aligned themselves with Johnny Depp's dark wizard character. However, we know where this character will ultimately end up, so quite a bit will be changing over the course of the planned three remaining movies.

The Joker Movie's Map Of Gotham City Is Packed With DC Easter Eggs

On the surface, director Todd Phillips' Joker is an unusual creature. Separate from the DC Extended Universe, the 1980s-set movie will see Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck transitioning from slightly unhinged to career criminal in clown makeup, and from what's been revealed so far, Batman won't play any role in this origin story. However, Joker isn't completely ignoring its roots, as evidenced by the map of Gotham City below, which is chock full of Batman and other DC Comics references.

If you simply glance at this map of Gotham City and its subway system from the Joker set (passed along by @UberKryptonian), it looks relatively normal, right? Upon closer inspection, though, Joker's version of Gotham City has a lot of areas named after both characters from the DC Comics mythology and individuals who have been influential in the DC realm. Let's start with some of examples based on fictional people first. There's a Wayne Avenue, of course referring to the Wayne Family, and there's also Kane County in the left hand corner, referring to Martha Wayne's side of the family. There's also an Otisburg, which I'm hoping is a nod to Lex Luthor's inept henchman Otis from Superman: The Movie. Fans will also recognize the Amusement Mile district, home of the amusement park where The Killing Joke took place.

As for real life people who've inspired areas of Joker's Gotham City, the most obvious example is the Snyder district, which is likely referring to DCEU director Zack Snyder, although I'd like to think it doubles as a call to Scott Snyder, whose Death of the Family and Endgame arcs are among the best Joker stories of the modern era. There's also Nolan Lane for Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan and Prince Street for the late, same-named musical artist who added some pop energy to the 1989 Batman movie. These are just a few of the name drops we caught when looking at the map, so feel free to share any others you spotted in the comments below.

Clearly Joker has not trouble dropping these subtle Easter eggs, but as far as direct DC Comics connections go, those are few and far between. In fact, outside of the Clown Prince of Crime himself (whose civilian identity is one never used before), the only character from the comics set to appear in the movie is Brett Cullen's Thomas Wayne, who is being depicted less sympathetically than usual. Joker's main cast also includes Robert de Niro as a talk show host who plays an integral role in Arthur Fleck turning to crime, Zazie Beetz as a cynical single mother who becomes Fleck's love interest, Frances Conroy as Arthur's mother Penny and Marc Maron as a booking agent on de Niro's character's show.

Equalizer 2 Box Office: The Denzel Washington Sequel Beats Out Mamma Mia 2

This summer at the box office has been one filled with sequels, and this week's Top 10 illustrates that quite intensely. Not only was this a weekend with three new sequels in wide release - with Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer 2 taking the top spot - but it's worth recognizing that all but two of the titles are follow-up stories. The Equalizer 2 is actually the first sequel that Denzel Washington has ever made, and if comparing the numbers to its predecessor is the ultimate mark of success, then we can say the new film did... fine. Its predecessor, which Antoine Fuqua also directed, made $34.1 million in its first three days when it came out in the fall of 2014, and the new movie only did slightly better. That being said, the film does deserve a bit of extra credit given the summer release date and the crazy amount of competition in play. It's not a spectacular amount of money (let's not forget that the new record was set in late April), but it's a solid start, and like the last movie it has a chance to make over $100 million domestically.

The chances of the film finding legs as the rest of the season plays out are actually fairly good too. Again, there are still plenty of big movies left to come out (one of the most exciting arriving this Friday), but The Equalizer 2 is on good footing. It didn't an overwhelming amount of critical approval, mostly inspiring middling reviews, but audiences are apparently really digging it. The first Equalizer only got an "A-" CinemaScore from audiences, but the sequel managed to go up half a grade and land an "A." That kind of positivity could wind up creating some nice word of mouth buzz - but then again you always do have to consider that the people seeing a film the first week are also those who are likely most excited for it.

What's actually kind of nice about this weekend's box office results is that the love is very much spread around. While The Equalizer 2 gets most of the attention for grabbing the number one position, we can't ignore than Ol Parker's Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! only made about $1.5 million less during its domestic debut. Once again it's a minor step up from the performance of the original, which was released the same weekend ten years ago and made $27 million, so it can be called a win. The movie has inspired some positive reactions from both audiences and critics, and could wind up making a good chunk of cash. That being said, there are probably fewer eyes on the domestic performance, given that more than 76 percent of the first movie's earnings (totalling $609.8 million) came from foreign markets.

Impressively seven films managed to make over $10 million this weekend - but sadly we do have to recognize a serious disappointment. Unlike Equalizer and Mamma Mia 2, the new Unfriended: Dark Web fell way short of matching the earnings of the original Unfriended ($15.8 million back in April 2015). Being a Blumhouse production that is entirely set across a series of screens, the film surely cost an incredibly little amount of money to make, but still this has to be seen in a negative light. Blumhouse is regularly trying to establish different franchises, and this one clearly isn't going anywhere.

As hinted at above, we do have an exciting week of new releases ahead of us, as the box office will witness a head to head matchup of Christopher McQuarrie's phenomenal Mission: Impossible - Fallout and the much-buzzed animated Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. They are both titles that should shake things up in a big way, so join me again next Sunday to see how the Top 10 shifts.
