Ethan Hawke Clarifies His Blunt Comments About Logan And Superhero Movies

Actor Ethan Hawke recently invoked the ire of legions of comic book movie fans when he said that Logan was not a great movie, intimating that it couldn't be one because it was a superhero movie. For some, this seemed like the kind of elitist take you occasionally see from critics and artists who look down on blockbusters and superhero fare as somehow less-than. Now, Ethan Hawke has clarified his comments about Logan and superhero movies, explaining that he wasn't trying to bash them, he was simply trying to talk about the business side of Hollywood. As he explained in a recent interview:

...I was talking about a much more nuanced point about money in America and what our obsession with the accumulation of wealth is. Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange is amazing, Chris Nolan's Dark Knight, James Mangold's Logan, I cited those because they're my favorites, and people took [it as] me criticizing them. What I was trying to say [is] we need a community that's making all kinds of movies. It's a part of it, and I think it pisses people off because they don't want to go back to the ghetto where comic books weren't taken seriously as art, and I agree with that.

What Ethan Hawke seems to be saying in his interview with Collider is that he is concerned about how these movies, the comic book and superhero movies, are the ones that make the most money now. Because of that, they are also the movies that are getting made the most. Hawke wants a variety of films out there and the almighty dollar is dictating that superhero films get the chance while other, perhaps deserving stories may not. The film business is a business but it is also a business that sells art and Ethan Hawke seems to want the art to have more weight in that equation.

Ethan Hawke also spoke to the fact that he remembers the time when comic books and comic book readers were looked down upon. That time has passed, however, and comic book properties and fandoms are no longer the scrappy underdogs they once were. So, there is perhaps a fear among fans that any sort of criticism of the genre, its effects, or calls for more of other kinds of movies could cause that stigmatization to return. Ethan Hawke doesn't want that any more than the rest of us do, but that is perhaps part of the backlash to his comments.

Ethan Hawke also confesses that he himself is a huge comic book geek (he was almost Doctor Strange) and that he loves and sees all of the comic book movies. We know he does appreciate some tentpole movies, considering how he recently said he wanted to be in a Star Wars film. Star Wars isn't superheroes, but it is in that same family of geeky things that now drive the film business. Thus, it may have been a bit hypocritical if he had some major issue with Logan and the like and not Star Wars.

The reality seems to be that he loves these kinds of properties and just wishes there was room in the space to get funding and distribution for smaller or mid-budget movies that aren't Star Wars and superheroes. This makes total sense, considering that his initial comments about Logan were made within the context of why film festivals are important. He was speaking about how they give smaller films a chance to get seen and increase awareness so that those films don't get crushed under all the big budget stuff, including superhero films.

Wait, Did Ron Howard Just Reshoot The Same Solo Scenes Lord And Miller Filmed?

Behind-the-scenes drama hardly uncommon when shooting a movie, but Solo: A Star Wars Story's was particularly notable, as last summer, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller exited the movie due to creative differences with Lucasfilm. Ron Howard was then hired as their replacement and oversaw the rest of principal photography and the extended reshoots. While Howard did implement a few changes upon boarding Solo, there have been conflicting reports about just how much the movie changed under Howard's supervision. Now one person supposedly associated with the Solo shoot claims that Howard ended up shooting his scenes using the exact same script that Lord and Miller used.

According to an actor who spoke anonymously with Vulture about Solo: A Star Wars Story's troubled production, when Ron Howard came aboard, there weren't any changes made to the script. Howard reportedly shot "scene for scene do-overs" of what Phil Lord and Chris Miller had shot during their time on the project. Assuming this unconfirmed information is correct, that means dialogue-wise, Solo will closely resemble or be an exact duplicate of the Lord and Miller version of the movie. This is in sharp contrast with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's reshoots, which saw Tony Gilroy penning new dialogue and directing entirely new sequences for the first Star Wars spinoff movie. This actor also stated that Howard only used parts of the same Solo sets that Lord and Miller used.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller departed Solo: A Star Wars Story last June, approximately 75% of the way through principal photography. Publicly, both the duo and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy have attributed the directorial shakeup to conflicting creative visions. But according to reports that came out shortly after the news of Lord and Miller's exit broke, specific issues during their time on Solo included them filming the movie as more of a comedy and butting heads with screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. This unidentified actor also claims that it took Lord and Miller would usually demand more than 30 takes of a scene, whereas Ron Howard only asked for two or three. Nevertheless, if this individual is to be believed, it sounds like Lord and Miller's influence will still be felt through the script, which lines up with what Donald Glover said about Ron Howard not really altering the vision for the movie.

Of course, even if this claim about the Solo: A Star Wars Story script not being changed is true, don't think that means Ron Howard didn't put his own spin on the movie. Perhaps the biggest change that came under Howard's tenure was recasting the character Dryden Vos. Although Michael K. Williams has completed all his scenes as the "half human, half mountain lion" when Lord and Miller were directing, Williams was unable to make Howard's reshoots due to scheduling conflicts with another project. As a result, Howard brought Paul Bettany in to take over as Dryden Vos, who was turned into a full human.

Solo: A Star Wars Story blasts its way into theaters on May 25, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller are being credited as executive producers for their work on the movie. The presence of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu fundamentally changed film distribution in a major way. Though the big screen used to be the only place to debut a feature, these online platforms have created avenues for smaller movies to avoid competing with projects from the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DCEU. In fact, with the Netflix release of his new indie film Sun Dogs, Xzibit spoke to CinemaBlend and compared Hollywood's quick shift to streaming to the music industry's slower adoption of the technology. The musician-turned-actor addressed Hollywood's transition to the streaming landscape and explained:

Don't candy coat it. If it's not a fucking superhero or horror movie they're not going to the theater... If you look at what's happening with film and television, it's the same thing that happened with the music industry. They weren't prepared to go from CDs to streaming and digital downloads and they took their time doing it, so the music industry suffered because of that. The movie industry is not making that same mistake and going to this platform, which goes to a broader reach and it goes to more households than people that don't have time or the income to go ahead and take five or six people in their family to the movie theater, so this is a definite positive step towards this film being seen by as many eyeballs as possible.

For those of you who are old enough to remember the shift from CDs to streaming platforms, Xzibit's remarks will likely make a certain degree of sense. The music industry was hesitant to make the transition to digital platforms, which resulted in some serious growing pains. Now, with that lesson in mind, Xzibit seems to think that Hollywood has learned from that transition, and has started to actively embrace the process of debuting smaller films on Netflix while movies like Black Panther or Star Wars: The Last Jedi continue to dominate. In the face of declining theater attendance, this is a major advantage for smaller films.

Directed by Warrior actress Jennifer Morrison, Sun Dogs tells the tale of a young man's futile effort to join the military and save lives in the wake of 9/11. By its very nature, the film is small in scope and style, which fundamentally makes it hard to compete with a "fucking superhero or horror movie" in a theatrical setting. However, Netflix affords the folks behind Sun Dogs a chance to debut it globally on one day, and the film's perpetual presence on the streaming platform removes the need for traditional metrics like opening weekend box office performance. In basic terms, Netflix gives a small movie like this a fighting chance to be seen.
