Did Return Of The Jedi Really Redeem Darth Vader?

As the Skywalker Saga will be drawing to a close with Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker, now's as good a time as ever to revisit some of the major plot points of the prior films. As the world wonders the meaning of the title, it may be worth revisiting the life of Anakin Skywalker, specifically his final adventure in the saga.

I'm talking, of course, about Return of the Jedi, in which Darth Vader thwarts the Emperor and kills him in order to save Luke's life. He and Luke share a touching moment, and he dies. Luke burns his body down on Endor and Anakin is later seen alongside Obi-Wan and Yoda as a Force ghost. It's a nice scene, but after all the things we've learned about Vader since that scene was originally written, was he really redeemed?

Consider for a moment what happened. Vader killed Emperor Palpatine not because he was disillusioned with the dark side or its plans, but rather to protect his son Luke. It's a cool thing to do, but did saving his son necessarily mean he was suddenly one of the good guys? Are we suddenly supposed to believe his goals for world domination and his anger at the Jedi way instantly went out the window?

Let's not forget that only minutes before, he was trying to bait Luke into turning to the dark side and declaring that he'd turn Leia to the dark side. It's also worth mentioning that Vader was only really paying forward a favor Luke already did in not killing him at the Emperor's request. Had Vader gotten the upper hand in that duel, it doesn't feel like Luke would've gotten off so easy.

Canon supplemental material has only made this plot point more muddy, as its been revealed Darth Vader had harbored aggressive feelings towards Emperor Palpatine for some time. He eventually discovered that he was manipulated into turning on everyone he loved, and that he was not responsible for Padme's death. Obviously knowing that would've made killing Palpatine easier, even if it meant sacrificing his own life to defeat him.

As much as one may want to believe Anakin became a good person again in that sweeping moment, it just doesn't make sense that he would. In a hypothetical situation where Anakin survived, what would've been his next move? Would he have resigned to the punishment for the multitude of crimes he committed against the Republic, or would he fight and continue to shape the world under his ideal vision?

Anakin seems more inclined to continue to try and rule the galaxy. Additionally, he made a very concerted effort to fully eradicate the Jedi even after Order 66, so he probably wouldn't be cool with Luke recruiting more Jedi if they were to be trained under Obi Wan and Yoda's teachings. Given all that we know about Vader, he'd probably go right back into tempting his son into finding a way away form the Jedi, much like Kylo tried with Rey.

And yet, Anakin's place alongside Yoda and Obi-Wan doesn't imply any of that in the slightest. His one act of saving Luke seemingly positioned him as a Jedi worthy of a spot among two of the most prestigious light side users in Star Wars canon. In a world that's so black and white, one would think the universe would recognize that one good act wasn't nearly enough for redemption or negate the scores of misdeeds he carried out over the years.

Those misdeeds go beyond mercilessly hunting the Jedi. There's literally too many to count, but keep in mind he's choked many officers (some to death) simply because they irritated him. Even before Darth Vader, Anakin was very much unable to reconcile his emotions, and his anger led him to do some incredibly over-the top-things. He even went so far as to slaughter younglings which, regardless of his intention to save Padme by serving the emperor, is irredeemable.

The good news is the expanded material still does justice to the ending of Return of the Jedi, regardless of whether Vader is redeemed. After all, Anakin aligned with the Emperor to effectively protect his family, so it makes sense that protecting Luke would ultimately overrule the allegiance he has to Palpatine. It still doesn't explain why Obi-Wan and Yoda were cool with him being around in the Force ghost afterlife, but perhaps stuff like that gets brushed aside in death.

So why is it so important we know Anakin's headspace and whether he was redeemed following Return of the Jedi? Well, with a title like Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker on the horizon and Vader's helmet appearing once again, one has to think that Darth Vader will play into the plot in some way. At least, one can assume that's true for Kylo Ren, who famously told his grandfather he would "finish what he started."

We're all well aware of what Anakin Skywalker started, but now it's a valid question to ask whether he still intended to finish his plan. Anakin may have turned his back on the Empire and being his servant, but that didn't necessarily mean he didn't wish to shape the world in an image. Had things gone right, and had Padme been saved, would things have gone differently?

Remember, these are questions that characters could get an answer to in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It could be through flashbacks of Luke reconciling with who his father was outside of that one moment, or it could be Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin to appear as a Force ghost to Rey or Kylo Ren. Should a conversation take place, would he push embracing the Dark Side, looking towards the light or maybe present a third option?

This is just one of the things to ponder as the countdown to Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker ticks ever closer day by day. The DC live-action universe has had a fascinating life on the silver screen. Grown from the success of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, the live-action universe has had plenty of peaks and valleys as it attempted to compete with the MCU. The shared universe as a whole appeared in jeopardy after the lackluster reception and box office performance of Justice League. As such, the pressure was on for James Wan to deliver with the underwater adventure Aquaman.

Luckily, the acclaimed horror director has done just that. Aquaman arrived just in time for the holiday box office, and has been cleaning up money-wise thus far. And aside from making more money than Justice League and even Wonder Woman, James Wan's Aquaman also brought DC its second critical success. Superman actor Henry Cavill is one of the film's many fans, and posted a perfect tribute to the project on Instagram. Check it out.

It's like looking at another Aquaman movie, no? It's just got a slightly smaller budget and a different Justice League member taking center stage.

The above image is sure to tickle the countless DC fans out there. Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry and his trident have been been front and center of Aquaman's marketing, so it's awesome to see another DC actor poking fun at the franchise. Especially when it comes with such sweet and supportive words for his former co-star.

Alongside Henry Cavill's funny Instagram post, he shared his thoughts on the Aquaman movie, and sent his congratulations to those involved in the DC blockbuster, saying:

Seriously though, I just finally got the chance to watch Aquaman here in Hungary. Jason, James and everyone involved in that movie, smashes it out of the (water)park. If you haven't seen it yet, go check it out. Jason, love you bro, you crushed it.

Despite being a busy man in the world of filmmaking, Henry Cavill did make a point to go and see DC's latest blockbuster. Like the critic and cinephiles alike, it seems Cavill was tickled pink with the work done in Arthur Curry's solo movie, and he's all too happy to sing the movie's praises. As long as he gets to include a silly photo and puny caption, that is.

Alongside his caption, Henry Cavill tagged both Jason Momoa and director James Wan, in hopes that they see his thoughts about their work. The pressure to deliver with Aquaman was sky high, and that's something that Cavill has likely grown accustomed to in the past few years. The 35-year old actor had big shoes to fill, given the iconography of the Man of Steel. And he's also seen how expectations have crumbled down with projects like Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. At least he didn't become a meme like Ben Affleck, though.

Henry Cavill's feelings toward Aquaman carry extra weight considering how unclear his status in the DC Universe. After the lackluster critical and box office performance of Justice League, DC once again went back to the drawing board and began restructuring its future slate of movies. As such, it was unclear if there would be a second Justice League movie, a Man of Steel follow-up, or if the Flashpoint movie would come to fruition.

Things got even more complicated months ago when rumors indicated that Henry Cavill had officially left his role as Clark Kent/Superman in the DC live-action universe. It was a report that concerned and disappointed the fandom, as Cavill's character has always been at the center of the shared universe. The actor even responded to this news cryptically, posting a strange video with his own action figure and wearing a Superman t-shirt.

Alas, there haven't been any concrete reports of Henry Cavill or Ben Affleck actually departing their roles. Warner Bros. responded to the Cavill rumors as well, claiming to still have a good working relationship with the actor, but revealing there were currently no plans for a second Superman solo movie. But with DC on the upswing with Aquaman, and Henry Cavill loving the movie himself, could he end up sticking around?

While DC's plans for Superman are still a mystery, the shared universe does have a handful of highly anticipated releases ahead. Aquaman breathed fresh air (or water, as it may be) into the shared universe, so moviegoing audience might be more keen to show up for the next few movies. They'll each provide something unique to the franchise, as James Wan's movie brought a colorful, fun, and surprisingly Shakespearean underwater adventure to theaters.

After Warner Bros. has finished cashing the checks for Aquaman's box office success, the DC live-action universe will move forward with David F. Sandberg's Shazam! The upcoming blockbuster will break new ground by focusing on the children of a superhero world, and focus heavily on naivety and comedy. It'll be in stark juxtaposition with Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which is reportedly aiming for a hard R-rating, and will focus on mob drama in Gotham City. Wonder Woman 1984 also has a release date, so there's certainly time for Warner Bros. to decide what it's doing with Superman.

For now, the studio is likely celebrating Aquaman's success. While DC characters are some of the most iconic figures in comic book history, the live-action universe has had its share of peaks and valleys. While Wonder Woman was a massive success, there have been a handful of low points, as well as some projects in the middle. Fans took umbrage with the darkness of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League was a frankenstein film due to its dual directors. And while Suicide Squad made money and even earned an Oscar win, even director David Ayer understands where things failed.

Aquaman is in theaters now, and making a ton of money at the box office. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle was the textbook example of an unexpected hit back in 2017. Emboldened by its successful revitalization of the Jumanji brand, a sequel was quickly put into the works, and as such the mad scramble was on to get the film ready for its December 17, 2019 release date.

Taking on the box office so close to a Star Wars sequel may seem foolish, but it certainly worked for the last Jumanji movie, and Jumanji 3 has one hell of a cast to help it even the odds. For now though, let's see who's returning, and who's new, to the world of Jumanji!

Dwayne JohnsonEvery group needs an intrepid leader, and as such, Smolder Bravestone is the defacto leader of the group of avatars returning from Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. But having Smolder returning to kick all sorts of ass just wouldn't be the same if any other than Dwayne Johnson was playing the role. So thankfully, hearing his name among the returning cast members, as well as producer of Jumanji 3, was the sort of blessing this project needed.

There's been plenty of action in Johnson's life since Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle's release, as he saw Rampage and Skyscraper, as well as the third season of Ballers jump off in 2018. Not to mention, 2019 is going to be a pretty big year for Dwayne Johnson in and of itself, as both his performances in Fighting With My Family and Hobbs & Shaw will be hitting the screens throughout 2019. So Jumanji 3's filming and release at the end of that very year should be a cherry on top of another productive year.

Karen GillanAnother vital co-star in the Jumanji universe is, of course, Karen Gillan. After all, what fun would it be to see Smolder Bravestone returning without Ruby Roundhouse to fight alongside him? Kicking, punching, and even dancing her way through danger are her specialties, as Ruby was quite the brawler in the previous Jumanji sequel. So even if she's, say, controlled by an old man playing her game, don't expect any of that to change too much.

2019 is also a pretty fantastic year for Karen Gillan, as she'll not only see Jumanji 3 heading to theaters, but she'll also have a couple of animation projects she'll be lending her voice to in the year. Both the animated adaptation of Jack London's Call Of The Wild, as well as Blue Sky Animation's Spies in Disguise, will hear Gillan's voice spouting from two different animated avatars. But, of course, her most anticipated role of 2019 is that of Nebula, in the Marvel Studios' soon-to-be mega blockbuster Avengers: Endgame.

Kevin HartZoologist. Weapons storage. Allergic to cake. Those are all vital terms that can identify Smolder Bravestone's official sidekick, Franklin "Moose" Finbar, and they're going to be important to identifying his role in Jumanji 3. More important is the fact that Kevin Hart will be stepping into the shoes, and undoubtedly those backpack straps, to reprise his Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle character.

In-between Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and Jumanji 3, Hart has seen his career diversified as much as anyone else in the cast has. Not only did he see a return to his usual comedy schtick in Night School, but Kevin Hart also scored an surprise hit with the recent release of The Upside. And Jumanji 3 isn't his only sequel for 2019 either, as he's returning as the voice of rabbit revolutionary Snowball in Universal and Illumination's The Secret Life of Pets 2.

That is, if he's not busy being eaten by hippos, or espousing his current controller's dismay that they aren't exactly the rugged Indiana Jones type. But no matter who's controlling Professor Oberon, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle wouldn't have been complete without Jack Black carrying the character through the film, and his return to Jumanji 3 only proves it!

Black has certainly been keeping up his family friendly credentials as of late, what with The House with a Clock in Its Walls and a brief appearance in Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween making his 2018 super productive. Though it does look like he's pretty open for 2019, which is good for the sake of his newly launched gaming channel on YouTube, "Jablinski Games." Of course, that's whenever he's not filming Jumanji 3.

Nick JonasJefferson "Seaplane" McDonough knows danger like he knows how to pilot a helicopter: quite well, thank you very much. The last piece to the returning Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle crew, his rugged countenance played by Nick Jonas would surely have been missed if it were absent from Jumanji 3. Not to mention, Jonas's character was a vital part to the backstory of the game, as well as how it tied into the Jumanji mythos overall; so even though he wasn't one of the more publicized characters in the film, he's pretty important.

Fortunately, it's been confirmed that Nick Jonas will be back as "Seaplane" McDonough for Jumanji 3, rounding how the Jumanji game's quintet. The big question now is who will be playing as the character. At the end of Welcome to the Jungle, the timeline reset so that Alex Vreeke was never trapped within the game for 20 years, and after being freed, the four main teens reunited with Alex, now played by an adult Colin Hanks. We'll circle back to that a little later.

SerDarius BlainIn real life, SerDarius Blain is over 30, but in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle he capably plays high school player and occasional homework cheater Fridge, who ends up in Kevin Hart's -- or should I say Mouse Finbar's -- body. In a new announcement we've learned he, along with the other "teen" characters in the last flick, will be returning for the still-untitled Jumanji 3. We wondered if the movie would throw together a different set of players this time around, as plot details are being kept under wraps, but we'll have to wait and see how the next movie in the franchise pans out!

Alex WolffAlex Wolff played Young Spencer in Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. If you've seen the flick, you'll remember that he's the character who eventually switches into the game's character Dr. Smolder Bravestone. Each of the younger characters grow up a lot during the events of the first film and it will be interesting to see if they are the major characters this time around or if they simply pop in to the plot. We'll let you know as soon as we know.

Morgan TurnerWhile details are still under wraps regarding Morgan Turner's return as Young Martha, she will most definitely be back, along with the rest of her younger compatriots. The deal means that nearly all of Welcome To The Jungle's cast members are back in the fold for Jumanji 3 and we can't wait to see what that entails.

Madison IsemanMadison Iseman, along with the other teens, will be returning in Jumanji 3. She plays young Bethany in the movie and her character is particularly significant. She saves the life of Alex and when the whole gang returns to the present they track Alex down, learning that Alex had named his own kid Bethany in gratitude for her saving his life. Young Bethany went from selfie queen to a teen with a lot of empathy during the course of the 2017 flick and it will be nice to see whether or not she returned to her social media roots or maintained a down-to-earth demeanor since the events in Welcome to the Jungle.

Colin HanksFor a while we were in the dark about if Seaplanes McDonoughs return in Jumanji 3 meant that his original player, Alex Vreeke, would be back as well. We can wonder no longer, as Colin Hanks, who cameoed as an adult Alex at the end of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, confirmed he will appear in Jumanji 3. though he would not divulge any details on how hes involved. The obvious answer is that Alex will be playing as Seaplane again and join the four youths in the Jumanji video game again. However, we cant rule out that someone new will play as Seaplane instead, and that Alex is only making a minor appearance before or after the latest round of craziness starts.

Rhys DarbyWhen Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungles four main characters were thrown into the game, they were eventually greeted by Nigel Billingsley, the NPC who informed them about the story and guided them throughout their journey. While it remains to be seen if Jumanji 3 will be set within that same game or take place in a completely different location, Billingsley will remain a constant, as Rhys Darby is reprising the role. No doubt hell once again be providing advice to the players, but perhaps Jumanji 3 will give him a little bit more to do this time around.

AwkwafinaThe first of our new cast members needs very little introduction, as Awkwafina had two pretty big movies last year: Ocean's 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. Now, she's entering the ring of big budget family entertainment, as Jumanji 3 has enlisted her as one of the new characters that will be introduced. More than likely, she'll be a human controller to one of the characters in the game, but that's pure speculation at this point, as all of the new characters are being kept under wraps. Awkwafina will also be heard in another big Sony sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2, set for release this August.

Danny DeVitoKaren Gillan has gone on record as stating that she'd love to have an older man controlling her character in Jumanji 3, as it would challenge her to take on the mannerisms of such a character. Well, she's going to have two actors to possibly choose from, one of whom is Danny DeVito, who's also recently joined the Jumanji 3 cast! Adding to the excitement that is DeVito's 2019 is a role in Tim Burton's live-action Dumbo remake, which reteams him with his Batman Returns director. Maybe his work with elephants will pay off in this possibly new jungle adventure.

Danny GloverLast, but not least, Jumanji 3 has most recently added a rather lethal weapon to their arsenal. Danny Glover was announced as the latest cast member to join the Jumanji 3 family, which poses the question of whether the two of them will be a pair of friends who stumble upon one of their grandkids' video games. Seeing as the original game is destroyed, and details for any of these new characters are under wraps, it's a valid guess; but as new information surfaces, we'll see if that pans out. Most recently seen in The Old Man and the Gun, Glover will also be seen in his other 2019 project, The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
