That All-Female Marvel Movie Was 'Blown Out Of Proportion,' According To Elizabeth Olsen

It's an extremely exciting time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After 10 years and 18 movies, this weekend brings Avengers: Infinity War, essentially ending the shared universe as we know it. While there are still three more movies left in Phase Three, the next slate of films is largely a mystery. As such, there have been plenty of ideas floated around, one of which being an all-female superhero flick. This rumor seems mostly stoked by Thor: Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson, and has made its rounds on the internet. Elizabeth Olsen was included in the story due to her role as Scarlet Witch, and now she's responded to those rumors. Sadly, it looks like it's not something anyone is really taking seriously. As she tells it,

I think that was something that was blown out of proportion by the media. So I don't know.

While seeing all the badass Marvel females team up for an epic battle against evil seems like a great idea, it doesn't seem to actually be gaining any steam over at Marvel. The studio is currently in the midst of finishing Phase Three and its mysterious next set of movies, so that all female blockbuster just isn't the focus.

While Elizabeth Olsen's comments to Variety may be a bummer, it certainly does seem like the female heroes of the MCU are getting their day. Next up in the shared universe (who would want to follow Infinity War?) is Ant-Man and the Wasp, which will be the first time a female hero has co-lead and made the title of a Marvel movie. Directly following that is Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, which will introduce Carl Danvers as possibly the strongest hero in the entire shared universe. While the DCEU seems to be trailing behind Marvel on all counts, it managed to release a female-led movie in far less time than the MCU.

It should be interesting to see how Phase Four continues to diversify its films, especially in regards to female characters. It looks like Scarlett Johansson is finally going to have her time in the sun with the still developing Black Widow movie, which is something fans have been calling for since way back in Phase 1.

As for Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, it's unclear if she'll ever ben given a leading role within the MCU. In her three appearances thus far she has played a supporting role, remaining a bit separated from the main action of the narrative. Olsen and Paul Bettany have joked about wanting a rom com of their two characters, which would definitely be a first. Ultimately we'll have to see both characters' fates in Avengers 4 before planning Wanda's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

You can catch Elizabeth Olsen in Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters now. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
