Captain Marvel Has Lost One Of Its Actors
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe wraps up Phase 3 with Avengers 4, the studio is delivering Captain Marvel, the origin story for Brie Larson's Carol Danvers. Over the last few months, the Captain Marvel cast has slowly been assembling, which included the addition of She's Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise. However, with Captain Marvel gearing up to begin principal photography, word has come in that Wise has exited the MCU film.
DeWanda Wise joined the Captain Marvel cast back in January, but Deadline reports that due to scheduling conflicts with She's Gotta Have It, which was renewed for Season 2 at Netflix, the actress was forced to bow out of appearing in the MCU's penultimate Phase 3 movie. There's no word yet on who Marvel is looking at or hired to replace Wise, and details about who this particular Captain Marvel character is are still being kept secret.
It's a shame that DeWanda Wise wasn't able to stay on Captain Marvel, but at least her reasoning for departing boiled down to bad timing rather than something like creative differences. Getting to appear in a Marvel movie is a big opportunity for any actor, but when you're also the star of a critically well-received Netflix series, that understandably takes priority. As for the character who Wise was hired to play, I previously speculated that it's Monica Rambeau, who is not only one of Carol Danvers' close friends in the comics, but a superhero in her own right. She was the second individual to take on the Captain Marvel identity in the Marvel universe, and she later went by the monikers Photon, Pulsar and Spectrum. It remains to be seen whether or not this is an accurate guess, but because Captain Marvel is rolling cameras soon, no doubt it won't be long until we learn who the actress is playing the mystery character.
Even with DeWanda Wise out, Captain Marvel still has a solid cast behind Brie Larson. Samuel L. Jackson is reprising Nick Fury, Jude Law and Gemma Chan are playing Mar-Vell and Minn-Erva, respectively, and Ben Mendelsohn and Robert Kazinsky have been cast in undisclosed roles (though Mendelsohn is rumored to be playing Kree antagonist Yon-Rogg). Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel will follow Carol Danvers as she's imbued with extraterrestrial powers and use these abilities to combat both the shapeshifting Skrulls. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet tackled the screenplay, which is based off the story put together by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve.
