New Shazam! Trailer Shows DC's Powerful Way Of Following Aquaman
If you're DC, how do you follow the $1 billion success of Aquaman? How about with a hilarious Shazam! trailer packed with new footage? That's what's up. On Sunday, January 20, Warner Bros. shared fresh and funny footage from its 2019 DCEU movie. Zachary Levi's Shazam! arrives in theaters April 5, but you can check out his new trailer right now:
Believe it or not, this is the first new footage most of us have seen since the first trailer was released back at San Diego Comic-Con. Another trailer was shown at Brazil Comic-Con, but it wasn't released online. That trailer was described by those in attendance, and seemed to include some of these shots -- including Shazam jumping off a building.
This TV spot/sneak peek/trailer takes us into the backstory of how teen Billy Batson (Asher Angel) became the adult superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi) when he was gifted that power by the wizard Shazam played by Djimon Hounsou.
This trailer also gives us a better look at Mark Strong's villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana and the many major action set pieces. Anyone who thought this might be a smaller superhero film needs to think again. Shazam! does still showcase its humor, especially in the end scene, where Shazam and his best friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) appear to visit a real estate agent to get their own "lair." Head to the bat cave, gents!
So far, fans seem to be having fun with Shazam! which is the entire point. No one is expecting it to be the DCEU's next billion club hit, so expectations aren't that high, but anticipation is pretty high. Maybe even higher than the other Captain Marvel movie? OK, let's not make it more of a feud than it needs to be.
This spring is going to be jam-packed with superhero movies. The MCU's Captain Marvel is first on March 8, then DC's Shazam! on April 5, then back to Marvel with Avengers: Endgame on April 26. This is why April may have a superhero problem. Do we all have enough time and money to do these films justice? They are just the tip of the iceberg, too, when it comes to spring 2019, never mind the rest of the year. It's crazy. Crazy good for us as fans, though.
Shazam! is part of the DCEU and will have nods to the shared universe, but you probably just read that DC isn't as big on the shared stuff anymore. They are headed in a new direction. Probably a good plan. For more on the DCEU, bookmark our handy guide.
