Why Solo: A Star Wars Story Can Have More Fun Than Other Star Wars Movies
When Solo: A Star Wars Story was first announced with the directors of The LEGO Movie attached, we knew we were in for something different, and while those directors may be gone, the humor we were expecting form the film may be largely intact. Donald Glover, who plays Lando Calrissian in the new movie, says that Solo will be a more fun Star Wars movie than previous franchise entries. Apparently, the film will simply take advantage of the fact that building tension was going to be difficult, and instead it will embrace that as a reason to just have more fun. According to Glover...
All the Star Wars' are really fun, but I think this movie, we know what's going to happen, we know they're not going to die, you know? Like, we know kind of what happens, but how we got there, I guess, is the crux of it. So we're allowed to have a lot more fun than I think in the other movies where you have to deal with a lot of lineage and what's going to happen. I think this movie's like just a fun, summer film. I'm really excited about it. It's really cool.
One of the major problems with any prequel story, is that the audience already knows what's going to happen. This can make creating tension difficult because you can't make your audience fear the death of a character that they already know is going to live. Rather than try and do that, Donald Glover tells ET that Solo: A Star Wars Story will simply accept it, and use that as an excuse to build a fun adventure for the characters of Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca.
While Phil Lord and Chris Miller eventually left the movie, it was clear from Lucasfilm hiring the pair behind the 21 Jump Street movie that comedy was going to be important in Solo: A Star Wars Story. While the relationship between the directors and Lucasfilm may not have worked out, the trailer for Solo clearly shows a movie with a much lighter tone than, say, the recently released Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
It's not to say that Solo: A Star Wars Story can't also have plenty of excitement and drama. The question of how the events of Solo transpire are still potentially interesting, even if we know that Han Solo will survive them. There's also the question of the new characters in the movie, as we don't know what will happen to them, since they have yet to appear, as far as we know, in any later Star Wars movie.
With Solo: A Star Wars Story just about three months away, we're all going to see very soon how the troubled production turned out. Hopefully, the movie is as much fun as Donald Glover says. We'll find out May 25.
