Disney World's Grand Floridian Greeter Richard Gerth Is Dead At 92

Disney World is supposed to be a place of fun and joy, but this morning it's a slightly sadder place, as one of the resorts' most famous cast members, Richard Gerth, has passed away. He spent nearly 30 years welcoming people to the Grand Floridian Resort, and as the resort is about to celebrate its 30th birthday, he was as much an institution as the building itself. Gerth was 92-years-old.

Richard Gerth said in an interview a few years ago that he never filled out an application for his job as the doorman at the Grand Floridian. He was hired on spot, apparently because somebody at the resort just decided they wanted him. From that day forward Richard would be the one to welcome you if you stayed at the Grand Floridian resort during your Walt Disney World vacation. Returning guests would make a point to stop and get a picture with Gerth every time they spent time at the parks. Getting a picture with Gerth was like getting a picture with Mickey Mouse or in front of the castle. It was just something you did every time without even thinking about it. He even had his own Facebook fan page.

As one might expect, Disney World fans are sharing their pictures in remembrance of Richard Geth, including actor and noted Disney fan, John Stamos.

The Grand Floridian is a popular location for Walt Disney World weddings, where's it's estimated Gerth assisted over 3,500 brides since the early 1990s. That's a lot of lives that Richard became a memorable part of in his time working at the Grand Floridian.

Walt Disney World has always seen a difficult conflict among fans between those who hold tight to tradition and those who are open to change. In the case of Richard Gerth, all of them are likely sad this tradition has come to an end, but now, as with all Disney traditions, something new will begin, which may become a tradition in its own right. Everything will feel quite different when those that return to the Grand Floridian are greeted by a different face and a different smile, but expect Gerth to never be entirely forgotten. In 1991 he received the Disney Legacy Award, the highest award available to a Disney cast member. This outpouring of love is proof that Richard Gerth truly left a legacy which will be part of many lives going forward.

Tim Burton Has No Interest In Doing Another Superhero Movie

Years before the superhero movie genre as a whole started to become popular in Hollywood, Tim Burton took DC Comics Caped Crusader into his hands with 1989s Batman and 1992s Batman Returns, two movies that took the vigilante in a drastically different direction compared to the 1960s campy version that the public knew best. Now that superhero movies are heavy hitters at the box office, you might have wondered if Burton has considered directing another superhero movie, but alas, hes not willing to contribute to that genre again. As the director put it:

I do feel grateful being there at a time when it felt new. I dont know that I could get that excitement again saying, Im going to go do Squirrel Boy for Marvel.

I dont know, I feel like Squirrel Boy could benefit from Tim Burtons gothic and eccentric touch. In all seriousness, Burton does have a point. When he was working on Batman, Superman, played by Christopher Reeve, was the only superhero whod experienced any major success leading full-length theatrical movies. This genre was largely untapped, and since Burtons Batman movie was pulling from the characters darker roots rather than replicating the formula of the Batman TV series, that allowed him to take more creative liberties. As a result, both Batman and Batman Returns showed those unfamiliar with the comics that Batman could be a darker character, though itd be another decade before other superheroes started to be brought to the silver screen and experience the same kind of success Burtons Batman movies did.

Now with both Marvel and DC churning out multiple superhero movies each year, Tim Burton made it clear during his interview with The Toronto Sun that hes not interested in delving back into this world since theres so many of these kinds of stories and he doesnt think he can generate the same amount of enthusiasm as he did decades earlier. That said, Burton did almost return to the world of superheroes in the late 1990s when he was tapped to direct Superman Lives, which would have seen Nicolas Cage playing the Man of Steel. However, due to the projects numerous delays, Burton eventually exited and moved on to Sleepy Hollow.

Of course, its not like Tim Burton has any trouble keeping his directing career chugging along since Batman Returns. From Ed Wood to Big Eyes, hes been making all sorts of movies, most recently delivering the live action Dumbo remake, starring Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton, the last two having acted together under Burtons watchful eye in Batman Returns. We havent learned yet what Burtons next movie will be, although there has been talk in the past about the possibility of moving forward with a Beetlejuice sequel. The folks at Marvel, though, should make a note not to call him.

As for Batman, with Ben Affleck hanging up the cape and cowl, a new, younger actor will succeed him as Gotham City Dark Knight for Matt Reeves The Batman, in theaters on June 25, 2021.

Operation Finales Strange Relationship With Inglourious Basterds

In 2009, Quentin Tarantino released one of the most shocking films of all time about World War II, weaving an intense, fun, fictional tale about a plot to kill the key members of the Third Reich in Nazi Germany with Inglorious Basterds. It was a film that not only ultimately won tons awards and accolades, but also introduced mass audiences to the impressive talents of actress Melanie Laurent. But if you think her role in the war film nine years ago had any connection to her new movie, Operation Finale, then you would be entirely mistaken, as I recently learned from the film's director, Chris Weitz:

I thought she was fantastic in Inglourious Basterds, and I really enjoyed that movie - which is strange in relation to our movie because in some ways it's a movie about movies. I know that Melanie was very careful about deciding to do this movie because she'd been offered so many World War II stories after Inglourious Basterds, and avoided it. She was ready to approach this character, which was great. Myself, I wasn't trying to put any spin on that character in this movie. If anything I sort of tried to clear my mind of that portrayal.

Unlike Inglourious Basterds, Operation Finale is a film based on true events, centering on the attempt by Israeli Mossad agents to extract Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Holocaust, from his home in Argentina after the war. Melanie Laurent's role in the movie is very different from her Quentin Tarantino part, playing an anesthesiologist instead of a theater owner seeking vengeance, and apparently that isn't a mistake. There was a strong awareness among Chris Weitz and Laurent that there would be comparisons drawn between the two features, and the director went as far as to actively try and not think about the 2009 hit when collaborating with her.

Of course, there are some very extreme differences between Operation Finale and Inglorious Basterds, starting with its relationship to reality and actual history, so it makes every bit of sense that Chris Weitz wouldn't have seen it as a reference. And thanks to the threat of typecasting it's understandable that Melanie Laurent spent as long as she did trying to stay away from World War II-related fare. For Weitz, as I learned during an interview earlier this year, it was all about finding the best talent to tell this incredible true story, and Laurent fit the bill.

Just because Inglourious Basterds wasn't being loaded into the Blu-ray player doesn't mean that Chris Weitz didn't have some other cinematic influences, though. I specifically asked about the movies he watched that influenced his work on Operation Finale, and there was one title specifically that he name dropped: Bernardo Bertolucci's The Conformist from 1970, based on the novel by Alberto Moravia centering on the rise and terror of fascism in Italy during the early 20th century. Said the director,

One important movie to me for this one was The Conformist, and it's preoccupation with the perennial appeal of fascism and its look. That one is probably the one that was most in my mind.

Operation Finale, which co-stars Oscar Isaac, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Nick Kroll in addition to Melanie Laurent, is out in theaters now.
