Christopher McQuarrie Has Some Blunt Opinions On What The Oscars Should And Shouldn't Do

For director Christopher McQuarrie, who helmed one of this summer's blockbuster hits Mission: Impossible - Fallout, one might think that the Academy's controversial Popular Film award might seem somewhat appealing, since the award show gives little recognition to action flicks these days. McQuarrie has offered his unfiltered opinion on the potential new Oscar category and has some ideas about what the focus of film recognition should be for the Academy in general. In his words:

I can be diplomatic, but fuck it. There was talk of a popular film category. I'm really glad they're not doing that, because I think the notion of that is to shy away from the fact that a -- I don't care, revoke my academy membership... I think that there's a point at which we've lost sight of the fact that what we're here to do first and foremost -- sorry if this sounds offensive to anybody -- is to entertain people and to move people. A part of me looks at that and says, 'Well, there are big movies that do that too.'

These are some blunt thoughts about the Popular Film category, Christopher McQuarrie said in a recent interview with Collider. He also brings up an important point about how if the new award was added it would divide the blockbuster hits from quality films when they can in fact be one and the same. He brought up how there once was a time when movies had to be epic to become Best Picture and they were the highest-grossing of the year -- think Titanic and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

Christopher Quarrie thinks somewhere along the line the definition of Best Picture shifted from being externally out there and innovative. The most recent recognition looks to commend the innovation of telling a unique story or bringing to attention a particular subject -- it's more about how it makes you feel, not how much it dazzled you cinematically. For example, the last decade of Best Picture winners primarily recognized small-budget dramas with powerful messages including Moonlight, Spotlight and 12 Years a Slave.

Over the summer when the Academy announced a new Popular Film category for the upcoming Oscars show, it sparked quite a debate among the film community and cinephiles, most of whom disagreed with the category addition. With the Academy backed into a corner, the group ultimately decided to shelve the new award for perhaps another year, or at least give themselves some time to better think it over.

Instead of the controversial Popular Film category, Christopher Quarrie suggested an alternative new category: the addition of one to award stunt workers and teams. In his words:

I can't think of a film recently that might qualify, but, that's an art, that's a skill, that's a craft. Those are people risking their lives and doing things that are absolutely and utterly truly amazing and are so much a part of an experience like that. Not just in films like this. You go look at Hell or High Water. Lone Survivor. The stunts in that movie were absolutely incredible. In terms of a new category, I think you need to do that.

It's a category that has been advocated for quite some time by filmmakers such as Edgar Wright and actress Helen Mirren. It's a great idea that seems to be an obvious addition to be included, since the Academy recognizes almost every other job it takes to put together a film. It would also allow for popular films to be recognized in a new category and a movie such as Mission: Impossible - Fallout would certainly have a good chance at an Oscar win in this category.

Before the Academy decided to hold off on the new category, Black Pantherwas at the center of conversation concerning what would win the first Popular Film award. Due to its high acclaim from critics, box office records and impact on diversity in film many believe the film should be recognized for more than a Visual Effects award. Black Panther will now be fighting for a chance at Best Picture as Disney pushes forward with its Oscar campaign.

Christopher McQuarrie has directed one of the great action movies, with Tom Cruise continuously proving himself to be the best there is at what he does. Thrilling from the moment it starts, MI:F goes into new territory for this hugely successful franchise, producing some of the best visual sequences this year in film.

The director, Christopher McQuarrie, has worked with the star before, delivering sick action, a continuation of what audiences have come to witness before, and perhaps one of the best sixth installments in a franchise ever made. Mile 22's Mark Wahlberg Explains Leonardo DiCaprio's Former Beef With Him

Back in 1995, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg starred together in the film The Basketball Diaries. There have been stories ever since about the pair not getting along, but now Mark Wahlberg explains the situation. According to the Mile 22 actor, he thinks the beginning of the issue came from the fact that Wahlberg had not done much acting before that, and there was a feeling that the outlandish rapper might not be the best fit for the serious story about addiction. According to Wahlberg...

It wasn't a disagreement. It was just, like, I think we both had a specific opinion about each other, certainly. I was just, ya know, as a rapper, I was just kinda out-there and loud and crazy and all this stuff, and it was a very serious movie and this very serious part, and so the director of the film [the late Scott Kalvert], he had made all my music videos, he felt like I was more than capable to play the part.

Interestingly, Mark Wahlberg tells Extra that much of the animosity between the two apparently all came very early in the process, as in, before Mark Wahlberg had actually auditioned for the role. Once the new actor was able to show that he was capable of doing what the script required, he and DiCaprio actually started to hit it off.

But no one had seen me act in a film, so I had to really kinda just go out there and prove myself. Once I finally got to the point where I was able to audition and read with him, then we just both kinda looked at each other, we were like, 'Wow!' We were literally out that night and we became fast friends.

Mark Wahlberg has spoken about the issues between himself and Leonardo DiCaprio before. Apparently, Wahlberg actually showed up late to the script reading in question, which made things a little awkward going into it, but it does sound like once DiCaprio understood that Wahlberg was more than capable of handling the part, whatever issues there were fell away.

Mark Wahlberg also confirms that he and DiCaprio have talked about working together again, so it does seem the two are truly friends, or at least friendly enough to be willing to share the screen again.

While The Basketball Diaries may not be as well known as other films either actor has made, it's a very well made look at the dark and disturbing world of drug addiction. One that does show just how good both of these young actors would eventually become. If you haven't seen it, you should fix that your next opportunity.

Olivia Wilde Says Focus On Her Looks In Hollywood Grosses Her Out

Olivia Wilde Says Focus On Her Looks In Hollywood Grosses Her Out

Olivia Wilde has been in the acting business for quite some time, but shell actually be stepping behind the camera for her next big screen venture Booksmart. In a recent interview, Olivia Wilde talked about how shes been feeling icky while doing press for the gig, although it has nothing to do with directing itself and everything to do with how Hollywood has perceived her up until this point. She said:

It is remarkable that I am 35 years old and this is the first job Ive ever had that wasnt entirely dependent on and connected to my looks. It grosses me out to acknowledge it, but Ive been thinking a lot about it.

If you look at Olivia Wildes resume prior to her directorial work in Booksmart, it includes such projects as Tron, Her, Cowboys & Aliens and other movies that pushed her into more romantic and sometimes even nude roles. Even in HBOs recent series Vinyl, she played a model and the wife of Richie, again noted for her good looks.

Not that theres anything wrong with being good-looking, but for a long time in the actress career she really believed her job as an actress was to be everyones version of a perfect woman. Of course, life -- and work -- is a whole lot messier than that.

During the same interview with the New York Times, Wilde also mentioned feeling exploited in meetings, noting,

Have I ever felt exploited? Yeah. Do I realize that Id become numb to that? Yes. I had become numb to the fact that every meeting I went on with men and women, by the way I was going to be judged on my physical appearance. Because thats what actors deal with, and man, its exhausting.

Now the actress is growing older, she believes the parts she is being offered are more sophisticated and getting to work behind the camera has seemingly been more rewarding than playing a part in someone elses story. Olivia Wilde went on to reflect that "it only gets more interesting when you get too old to play dumb."

Although she says she doesnt regret roles like her gig on The O.C., which really helped to jumpstart her career, Booksmart is Olivia Wildes story. The movie has already earned some praise for its coming-of-age subject matter (and shout out to somebody finally putting Kaitlyn Dever in the spotlight), but if you ask Olivia Wilde, shes simply proud of how Booksmart helped push her past the superficiality of her earlier work and into something more fulfilling:

I was there only because of my brain and my heart. And the sense of fulfillment that comes from that is really massive. Its a profound shift for me.

Well have to see how Booksmart fares in the fickle world of moviegoing, but with any luck well continue seeing more from Olivia Wilde both behind and in front of the camera. In the meantime, Booksmart opens on May 24, 2019. Take a look at other upcoming releases with our full movies schedule.
